How to Access the Diagnostics Menu - Helpful
for testing the speed/reverse sensor taps.
Quick note: This Navigation unit does not use an
external "box" or ECU like many other Toyota Navigation systems. This is
an all in one unit. The ECU (DVD Drive) is built into these units.
The stock 2002-2003 Camry, 2003-2004 4Runner, 2004 Sienna Navigation units use
an external ECU which is located in the rear of the vehicle. The Solara Navigation unit
we sell can be retrofitted to these applications instead of using the actual
Navigation unit made for the vehicle. What's the advantage to using the Solara
unit? To install an actual Sienna, 4Runner, older Camry unit from scratch
would mean running wires all over your vehicle from front to back between the
head unit and the ECU. Not to mention we can only get a hold of Solara
navigation units which means you'll end up paying a much higher price,
approximately $5,000, for a Navigation system that is more complicated to
install. The Solara units
allow the customer to maintain the stock feel of their vehicle without paying
retail prices and spending countless hours on installation.
Since you already have the JBL sound system installed, your
current plugs on the rear of your existing stereo will transfer over to the
Navigation unit. Once all of these plugs are transferred, you will have
power to the Navigation and output to all speakers. The GPS Antenna can be
mounted behind the dash anywhere there is room.
After the GPS antenna is mounted, click on the "DEST"
button. The destination menu appears. Notice on the far left of the
screen there is a picture of the North America continent. Touch the
"Change" button to select your region.
Once your region is selected, drive around your area until you
receive a signal. Whatever you do, DO NOT
manually calibrate the unit if you do not receive a signal right
away. Drive until you get the signal, it should only take around 3 minutes
at the most. Once your location is zeroed in, the GPS will accurately keep
track of your vehicle's position. If you shall ever lose the GPS signal
(under a bridge, underground parking), the speed sensor will help compensate for
the loss and then find your exact location when the signal is regained.
The last step is installing the speed and reverse sensor
wires. The speed sensor wire tells the Navigation unit how fast you are
going so it can keep track of your location if the GPS signal were to be lost.
The voice navigation and auto-reroute function will also not work until the
speed sensor wire is connected. The reverse sensor wire tells the
Navigation unit when you're in reverse, this way it knows to show you going
backwards instead of forwards. You'll also need the reverse wire connected
if you decide to get a reverse camera which displays everything behind you on
the Navigation unit's screen.
External Speaker
(Not Included) for
Voice Navigation installation instructions.
ONLY CERTAIN TOYOTA VEHICLE'S
REQUIRE THIS SPEAKER. Check your
vehicle's unique instructions above to see if this
information applies to you.
In order to acquire voice navigation from this channel, you'll
need to add an amplified speaker. Recently one of our customers, a
master technician from Bossier-Atkinson Toyota, took some time to write out
his install instructions for us, to pass onto our customers.
All of these items were
purchased at radio shack for $40.00. I soldered a 1/8" stereo plug to the
+(pin 11) -(pin 13) coming out of the navigation unit (20-Pin plug - plug
R13
on the picture of the pin diagram of the unit located at the top of the page).
I then found a pair of amplified speakers for use on a home computer (item#
4001446) that operates on 7.5 DC. Next I used a universal 12 volt DC adapter
(item# 2731810) to reduce the voltage to 7.5 volts. The next step was to
install a power outlet (item#2701556) to plug the 12volt adapter into (wired
into the back of the factory power outlet for switch power). Then it was easy:
-
Remove the passenger seat and install the speaker to the
carpet with a zip tie. There are 2 speakers in the kit, but I removed the
second speaker since 1 was loud enough & easier to find a home for.
-
Run the power & speaker input wire under the center console
towards the dash board.
-
Plug in the 12 volt adapter to the new power out let mounted
under the console.
-
Plug the wire into the 1/8" stereo jack coming out of the Nav
unit. (recommend using a shielded 2 wire cable with the shielding grounded to
the navigation unit to reduce ignition noise. I did not do this, with the
speaker under the seat I could not hear it, but it was slightly noticeable)
-
Re-install the seat & console.
- Go for a road test to adjust the
volume to your preference
Where to insert the two
wires into the (R13) plug
Looking at the rear of the
20 pin plug (back side with wires coming out), this is how the pins are
numbered - Speaker taps are cyan:
With the two
wires/connectors OEMValue provides, insert them into pin slots 13 and 11. Add
a ground loops insulator (item#270-054) if there
is a hissing noise coming from the amplified speaker.
Extra Tips from SeanY at Siennaclub.org reference:
http://www.siennaclub.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=11673&st=0
"1. Voice Guidance : as expected the wiring is still the
same as the 2006 Solara Model.
if you're using the external AMP, you must make sure that
you use the correct pair of 3 wires (IVO+/SLD or IVO-/SLD). If you, somehow,
use IVO+/IVO-, it may, may not work.
You must use all 3 wires IVO+ to INT+, IVO- to INT-, & SLD only terminates on
Nav end but runs the full length of cable to "shield" from noise.
If you swap + with - or +/- with SLD, or not use SLD then you will either get
a very low sound or static or nothing."

Speed/Reverse Sensor Plug or Wires
Refer To Plug Diagram At Top Of The Page
Plug (R12)
|
 |
Most of the newer vehicles already has this
plug behind the dash, not connected to anything. Simply plug the unit
into the rear of the Navigation system if your vehicle is already prewired
with this harness. If you do not have the harness behind your dash,
you will need to extract the two wires on the right from a 4-Pin CD-ROM to
Audio Card Connector Cable. |
To connect these wires if the
plug is not already preinstalled, you'll need a wire schematic of your vehicle.
They can be found in shop manuals that are created specifically for your
vehicle. Also, try your local car audio shop if you do not have the
resources to connect these plugs yourself. They will usually do it for a
small fee.
IF speed and reverse sensor wires were
not available when you made your purchase:
You will need to purchase the following cable from
Newegg.com:

GENERIC AUDIO 24" 4-pin
Connector Cable Model 11A1-12418 - OEM
Model #: 11A1-12418
Item #: N82E16812102104
(also try your local Radio Shack or Best Buy)
You will then need to extract the two
pins from the audio cable by cutting off the plastic molding to expose the pin
connector.
How to install the Speed Sensor, Reverse Sensor wires:
The wire located on the far
left (wire #5) is to be connected to the reverse switch. The wire on the
right (wire #3) is to be connected to the speed sensor/speedometer. If you
can acquire a diagnostics manual from your local dealership, refer to the
combination wire assembly. From there you can find out which wire goes
where.
Vehicles KNOWN to have this PLUG preinstalled
2005-2006 Tundra
Late 2005 Sienna - 2006 Sienna
2006 4Runner
2005-2006 Sequoia
2006 - 2008 Solara Convertible
Optional Accessories:
We will not ASSIST with the install of ANY
aftermarket accessories. Once again, this is for information purposes
only. Refer to message forums or your installer for further information.
Reverse Camera (not
included)

Many of our customers
decide to add a reverse camera after they have finished the Navigation install
and have confirmed everything is up and working correctly. Most kids,
animals, and smaller objects directly behind your vehicle simply cannot be seen
with a normal rear view mirror. The reverse camera assists the driver in
backing up and covers the blind spots that cannot be seen with a normal rear
view mirror by displaying the surroundings on the display of the Navigation
unit. In the long run, this is a great accessory to have as it could save
you thousands of dollars from preventing accidents or even endangering someone's
life.
There are two options for the reverse camera.
You can either go aftermarket, or purchase a stock camera. The stock
Camera usually sells for around $400 at your local dealership and comes with a
plug and play harness. The aftermarket usually costs between $100-$200
(depending on quality desired) and requires making your own harness from the
FRONT to the Back of the vehicle. No matter which option you choose, you
will need to insert the pins into the R10 connector, more information below.
Aftermarket Camera - What should I look for?
We
recommend the Eclipse BEC-106 reverse camera. Type "Eclipse camera" on
www.ebay.com
in the search bar and you can see what they are selling for. This camera
already comes preinstalled with the wire harness that connects to the camera.
Simply extract the pins with the wires attached from the plug (Navigation end)
and attach them accordingly to our installation instructions below.
Or you can purchase a camera for less that is not
so plug and play, which will be a little more work however it can save you
money...
We went ahead and
purchased the HQ Keyhole Rear View Camera from
Yan Laboratory Electric Science and Technology.
Camera arrived in 3 days via Airborne
Express. We will post install instructions for this particular camera
soon...
You can find them with a search on Yahoo or eBay
under the keywords "reverse camera"
First, you want to make sure the camera is a true
reverse camera. This means that the video camera reverses the image so the
image can be shown like a rear view mirror. If you happen to purchase a
camera that works as a normal video camera, backing up will be harder than ever.
The next attribute you would like to consider is
the viewing angle. Usually they are available in 45, 90, 180 degree.
We recommend going with a 90 or 180 degree viewing angle.
Another decision you'll need to make is if you
want to have the camera mounted below the bumper, in the bumper (drilling
required) or in place of your trunk/hatch key lock.
Make sure the camera is in NTSC video format, as
opposed to PAL.
Take note of the voltage required by the camera
so you can supply appropriate voltage. You'll need a 12 volt camera if
you're connecting it to your reverse lights. You'll need a lesser voltage
camera if you're connecting it to the Navigation system. We currently do
not know the voltage output for the camera from the Navigation system so we
recommend going with power from your reverse lights.
Installing an Aftermarket Camera.
First thing first, make sure you have the reverse
sensor wire connected correctly. If your reverse sensor wire is not
connected, connect it now before proceeding.
Your aftermarket camera should come with
appropriate mounting, one video RCA plug, and two wires for power and ground.
Some cameras come with the power wire only and the camera is grounded through
the mount.
First, you'll need to purchase a shielded video
extension plug that reaches from the navigation system to the reverse camera.
20' is usually long enough, you may want to measure. One end of the video
plug will connect to the reveres camera, the other end of the video plug will
need to be spliced.
Connecting Power and video to the Reverse
Camera.
Tap into the wires from your reverse lights, you
may need to use a voltage tester to determine which wire is negative and which
is positive. Once you know which is which, splice into the wires and tape
the taps. Shift your vehicle into reverse, and enjoy the picture.
Note: If you do not receive a picture,
ensure ALL of your taps are correct. Some of our customers report that
they needed to reset the memory of the Navigation system through the diagnostics
menu in order for the Navigation unit to recognize the camera.

perfect, it still has it's flaws. You have to speak VERY clearly in order
for it to recognize your voice and it does not recognize certain accents.
Some commands include (randomly listed): Track up, FM, ski resort, hotel,
dual map, quick access point #5, etc. There are 100 commands that can be
carried out through the microphone.
